The beautiful instruments played by the Calidore String Quartet were made in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, and the group’s programming and recordings range from Bach to Bartok . . . but frequently beyond. The four musicians are confirmed millennials, playing with fresh intimacy for 21st-century audiences and mentoring students who will continue the evolution of chamber music. The ensemble was barely launched from its 2010 founding at Colburn School in Los Angeles (the quartet’s name is a salute to California, the “golden state” of its origin) before the accolades started to roll in, including the whopping hundred thou grand prize of the 2016 M-Prize International Chamber Music Competition. An expanding inventory of grants, fellowships, prizes, and awards, as well as significant critical acclaim, has powered them to prestigious concert venues and festivals around the world. The quartet is currently on the faculty of the University of Delaware School of Music and in residence with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. The ensemble’s recordings of Beethoven’s complete string quartets, a musical Everest, are being released by Signum Records.
